With the September 11, 2001
tragedies, we all became acutely aware that terrorism on American soil
is very much a reality. Even before these tragic events, our local
elected officials recognized that Hampton Roads may be at risk and the
region needs to be prepared. The cities and counties of Hampton Roads
have joined together and developed a regional plan for a Metropolitan
Medical Response System (MMRS). The purpose
of the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Medical Response System is to develop
and sustain a comprehensive medical response capability for the Hampton
Roads communities to the health and medical consequences of a weapons of
mass destruction terrorist acts as well as any natural or technological
disaster. Through preparation and coordination, local law enforcement,
fire, hazmat, EMS, hospital, public health,
emergency management and other "first response" personnel plan to more
effectively respond in the first 48 hours of a public health crisis.
